In January 2018, Argyll & Bute HSCP started a new “enhanced extra care” service at Lorne Campbell Court in Campbeltown. This was done with Cairn Housing Association (CHA) after Auchinlee Residential Care Home closed.

Lorne Campbell Court is more like normal housing that is easier to manage with a caretaker. People came to live at Lorne Campbell Court but needed extra care provided by the HSCP.

This did not completely replace the care home, but it helped people stay in their own area instead of moving away for care. The building also had a place for respite care. A review of all Care at Home and Care Home services was suggested in 2017, but it was paused because of funding problems and Covid‑19.

Care at Home and Care Homes are still important services for Argyll & Bute HSCP and reviews are being progressed, but they are at risk because they are becoming harder to run. You can find more information about what we want to do to change this here.

In March 2023, Argyll & Bute Council bought Kintyre Care Centre for the Integration Joint Board (IJB) because the owner, HC1, could not find a buyer. HSCP believed closing the care home would cause serious problems for local people. However, running the care home also created extra costs that were not planned for.

HSCP has also invested money to employ Care at Home workers after some providers were unable to continue offering services in the area.

When reviewing our budget, we look at all services and areas. We think about the risks, how changes affect people who use services and their carers, and whether we can meet demand using our local workforce. Enhanced extra care is also used in Mull (Bowman Court), and we are reviewing that service to decide how it can continue to serve its community. There are no plans to introduce enhanced extra care in other parts of Argyll & Bute.
