What this review is about
Argyll & Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) is looking at how people in Argyll & Bute get hospital dialysis. We started this work in March 2025.
More and more people need dialysis, so we must check if the current services are still right for our residents. We want to make good recommendations about where dialysis services should be in the future.
What the recommendations must do
They must make sure:
People have fair access to dialysis.
We use our staff, money and equipment in the best way.
We think carefully about the geography of Argyll & Bute and the specialist staff and equipment needed to run dialysis safely.
Dialysis services for children are not included in this review because children’s dialysis is planned nationally.
What is happening now?
A Review Oversight Group has created a set of service options.
We have a survey to gather thoughts from:
People who use dialysis now
People who may need dialysis in the future
The wider community
We are still at an early stage of planning. This stage is called an options appraisal.
When this work is finished, we will report the results — including the survey findings — to the Argyll & Bute Integration Joint Board (IJB). The IJB will then decide what should happen next.
You can complete the survey online, see the link below, or you can download the survey here, fill it in and mail it to us:

Argyll & Bute HSCP is reviewing how our residents access hospital dialysis services. We started this work in March 2025. The review has become necessary as there are now more people in Argyll & Bute who need dialysis. We are looking to make recommendations about where we should provide dialysis services for our residents in the future. The review recommendations need to ensure:
appropriate and equitable access to hospital dialysis for our population
that we use our limited resources effectively and efficiently
The geography of Argyll & Bute as well as the staffing and technical requirements for running a hospital dialysis services means that we need to consider a number of complex issues.
Dialysis for children is out of scope as this is a nationally commissioned service.
The Review Oversight Group has now developed service options. We have set up this survey to gather feedback about these options from service users, potential service users and the wider community.
It is important to keep in mind that we are very early in the process of deciding how to move forward in regard to providing hospital dialysis in Argyll & Bute. We are currently going through a process called options appraisal.
How are we going to use your response?
We will combine all responses to this survey in a report to the Review Oversight Group to help them understand the preferences and views of current and potential service users, their families and friends and the wider public.
The outcome of the options appraisal, along with the results from the survey, will be presented to Argyll & Bute Integrated Joint Board. They will use this information to provide direction on how we should progress.
